About Bali

Bali is small enough to cross in a morning and layered enough to take a fortnight. The middle of the island is volcanic and green, cut into terraces that have been irrigated the same co-operative way for a thousand years. The coasts are entirely different animals — surf and sunsets in the west, quiet reef and black sand in the east. Offerings go out on the pavements at dawn every single day, which tells you something about how little of this is arranged for visitors.

What you'll do

The four we'd book first

  1. Sunrise on Batur

A two-hour climb in the dark to a rim above the cloud, with Abang and Rinjani coming up out of it as the light arrives.

  2. The terraces before the coaches

Jatiluwih rather than Tegallalang if you want them empty — a UNESCO valley of subak-irrigated rice, walkable in an hour.

  3. Diving the Liberty wreck

A torpedoed US cargo ship lying in 30 m off Tulamben, shallow enough that snorkellers see the bow.

  4. A temple ceremony

Odalan festivals run on the 210-day Pawukon calendar, so there is nearly always one on. Sarong on, and stand at the back.
