About Iceland

Iceland sits on the seam between two tectonic plates, which is why the ground is warm, the rock is black and there are more waterfalls than anyone has bothered to count. Ring Road One goes all the way round the island in about 1,330 kilometres, and it is the trip — glaciers on one side, the Atlantic on the other, and a village of two hundred people every hour or so. The weather is not a detail here; it changes four times a day and closes roads without warning, so an itinerary needs slack built into it. Come between September and March for the aurora, and accept that it is a lottery you enter three nights running.

What you'll do

The four we'd book first

  1. Inside a glacier

Crampons on at Sólheimajökull and an hour walking up the tongue past crevasses and ash layers, each one a different eruption.

  2. Jökulsárlón, and the black beach

Icebergs calve off Breiðamerkurjökull, drift down the lagoon and wash up on Diamond Beach, where they sit on black sand until they melt.

  3. Three nights for the aurora

The forecast is a probability, not a promise. Three dark nights away from town, and a hotel that will wake you if it starts.

  4. Somewhere hot to sit

Skip the Blue Lagoon's queue for the Sky Lagoon's sea-edge infinity ledge, or a village pool where the locals actually go.
