Arrive in Reykjavík

Lava, and the city
A morning helicopter over the Fagradalsfjall eruption site with a landing on the ridge, then Reykjavík and a tasting menu at Dill.

Þingvellir, and Silfra
The rift with a geologist, then a dry-suit snorkel between the plates in glacial meltwater with a hundred metres of visibility.

Superjeep into Þórsmörk
Across the Krossá's braided fords into the valley between three glaciers, a walk up to Valahnúkur, and a lodge at the head of it.

Landmannalaugar
North over the F-roads to the rhyolite mountains — ochre, green and pink hillsides — with a hot river to sit in at the end of the walk.

The empty interior
The Fjallabak route past Eldgjá's fissure and Ófærufoss, seeing perhaps two other vehicles all day, and a lodge with no phone signal.

Down to the glacier lagoon
Out of the highlands to the south coast, a private zodiac in among the Jökulsárlón bergs, and a design hotel outside Höfn.

On top of Vatnajökull
A helicopter onto Europe's largest ice cap for a champagne landing, then Skaftafell and Svartifoss's basalt organ pipes on the way back.
