    Arrive, and kit up

    Into Reykjavík, boots and shells checked with the guide, and a briefing on which days the weather may move.

    Inside a volcano

    The hike across the Bláfjöll lava to Þríhnúkagígur and a cable lift 120 m down into the magma chamber, which has been empty for 4,000 years.

    Snowmobiles on Langjökull

    Up onto the ice cap by superjeep, an hour on snowmobiles across the plateau, and the man-made ice tunnel bored into it.

    Canyons and the south coast

    The Fimmvörðuháls lower trail past Skógafoss's twenty-six upper falls, then Reynisfjara and a guesthouse at Vík.

    Axes, crampons and front-pointing on the seracs of Svínafellsjökull, with two hours of instruction before anything vertical.

    A superjeep out onto Vatnajökull to a blue ice cave that only exists between November and March, and refreezes differently every year.

    Kayaking the bergs

    A sea kayak on the Heinabergslón lagoon among icebergs the size of vans, quieter and far emptier than Jökulsárlón.

    Vestrahorn, and the last climb

    The black-sand dunes under Vestrahorn at first light, then a scramble up Hoffell with a hot spring at the bottom of it.
