Day by day

8 days, planned in full

A there-and-back-again route on the south and west instead of the full loop, so no day is more than three hours in the car. Puffins, whales, lava tubes and horses.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Reykjavík

In from the airport with a stop at the geothermal beach at Nauthólsvík, where the sea is heated, and an early dinner.

    Night
    Reykjavík
    Meals
    Dinner
  2. Day 2

    Whales, and a lava tube

Three hours out of the harbour with humpbacks and white-beaked dolphins, then a walk through Raufarhólshellir's lava tunnel with head torches.

    Night
    Reykjavík
    Meals
    Breakfast
  3. Day 3

    The Golden Circle

Snorkelling gear stays in the car — instead, walking the rift at Þingvellir, waiting for Strokkur to blow, and a tomato farm greenhouse lunch.

    Night
    Hvolsvöllur
    Meals
    Breakfast, lunch
  4. Day 4

    Horses and waterfalls

A two-hour ride on Icelandic horses, which have a fifth gait and a temperament made for children, then Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss.

    Night
    Hvolsvöllur
    Meals
    Breakfast, dinner
  5. Day 5

    Black sand and puffins

Reynisfjara's basalt columns — with a strict talk about the sneaker waves — and Dyrhólaey's puffin burrows if it is between May and August.

    Night
    Vík
    Meals
    Breakfast, dinner
  6. Day 6

    Glacier walk, gently

The family route on Sólheimajökull: ninety minutes, no crevasse crossings, and crampons for everyone over eight.

    Night
    Vík
    Meals
    Breakfast, dinner
  7. Day 7

    West to Snæfellsnes

The peninsula they call Iceland in miniature: Kirkjufell's mountain, a black church, seals at Ytri Tunga, and a farm stay for the night.

    Night
    Snæfellsnes
    Meals
    Breakfast, dinner
  8. Day 8

    Fly home

Two and a half hours down to Keflavík, with the Krauma baths broken into the drive if there is time.
