Cancellations & refunds

Plans change. Here is exactly what you get back and when, written so you can work it out yourself before you ring us.

How to cancel

Tell us in writing — support@journeymaker.co.in, or a WhatsApp message to +91 88799 19545. A phone call is a fine way to start the conversation, but the cancellation takes effect from the moment we acknowledge it in writing, so please get it on paper.

We date your cancellation from when your message arrives, not from when we get round to replying. If you send it at 11pm on the last day of a better refund band, that is the band you get.

What comes back to you

The scale below applies to the trip cost you have paid us, and is counted in whole days before your first travel date. It is deliberately readable — no clauses hidden in a schedule at the end.

What the retained share is for

It is not a penalty. By the time you cancel we have usually already paid deposits that the hotel or operator will not return to us, and the planning hours are spent whether you travel or not. The nearer departure gets, the more of your trip we have already bought on your behalf.

Where a supplier turns out to be more generous than the scale above, we pass that on. If a hotel refunds us in full at 20 days, you get that money — we do not keep the difference.

Costs that cannot be refunded

Some things leave our hands the day they are bought, and no notice period brings them back:

  • Airline tickets on non-refundable fares, and any airline change or cancellation charge.
  • Visa and consular fees, once an application has been lodged.
  • Travel insurance premiums, once the policy is in force.
  • Event, permit and rail tickets sold as non-refundable — Inca Trail permits and festival seats are the usual ones.
  • Peak-season and New Year deposits, where the property takes them non-refundably.

Changing a trip instead of cancelling

Moving dates is very often cheaper than cancelling, and we would rather you asked. More than 45 days out we will move a trip once at no fee from us, and you pay only what the suppliers charge plus any difference in season pricing.

Inside 45 days a change is priced as a cancellation and a fresh booking, because that is what the suppliers treat it as. Swapping a traveller's name is usually possible and usually cheap; ask before you assume it is not.

If we cancel

If we cancel a trip for any reason of our own, you choose: the whole amount back, including deposits, or the same value moved to another trip. We will also cover any cancellation charge on flights we booked for you.

If something genuinely outside anyone's control stops the trip — a border closing, a natural disaster, a government travel ban — we refund everything we can recover from suppliers and charge you no fee of our own. We cannot refund what an airline keeps, which is the reason the next section exists.

Please buy insurance

The gap between what this page can refund and what a trip actually costs you is exactly what travel insurance is for. Illness, a family emergency or a missed connection are all things a policy covers and a tour operator cannot.

Buy it when you pay your deposit, not the week you fly — cancellation cover only works if it is in force before the thing you are cancelling for happens.

How refunds are paid

To the same account and method you paid from, in the currency you paid. Bank transfers reach an Indian account in 5 – 7 working days from our approval; card refunds depend on your issuer and typically take 7 – 14 days to appear on a statement.

We will confirm the exact amount in writing, itemised, before we send it — so you can see what was recovered and what was not.

If you think we have got it wrong

Write to support@journeymaker.co.in and a planner, not a queue, will look at it. We would much rather re-examine a refund than argue about one. Office hours are Mon – Sat, 10:00 – 19:00 IST.
