Arrive in Ubud
A courtyard guesthouse in a family compound rather than a hotel, and an evening walk to whichever temple has a ceremony on.

Cloth
A full day at Threads of Life and a Tohpati workshop: natural dye plants, wax-resist batik, and an ikat loom you get to sit at.

Silver and stone
Celuk's silversmiths in the morning, the stone carvers at Batubulan after, and a Legong performance at the palace in the evening.

Gamelan
A morning with a village orchestra in Blahbatuh learning the interlocking kotekan patterns, badly and happily, on borrowed instruments.

East to Sidemen
Across to the valley with a stop at Klungkung's painted Kertha Gosa ceiling, and an afternoon watching palm sugar being boiled down.

Besakih at dawn
The mother temple on Agung's slope before the day-trippers, then Tenganan, a walled Bali Aga village that predates the Majapahit and knows it.

Across to Munduk
Up into the coffee and clove hills of the north-west, cooler and wetter, with an afternoon walk to the Melanting waterfall.

Coffee, and the lake temples
A morning at a smallholding picking and roasting, then Ulun Danu Beratan and the twin lakes viewpoint in the softer afternoon light.

Down to the north coast
Banjar's hot springs and the Buddhist monastery at Brahmavihara-Arama, then back inland for a last night in the hills.
