About Santorini

Santorini is the rim of a volcano that blew its middle out around 1600 BC, which is why the west side of the island is a 300-metre cliff and the east side slopes gently into the sea. The villages on that rim — Fira, Imerovigli, Oia — are built into the caldera wall itself, so a room can be a cave with a terrace hanging over open water. The beaches are black and red volcanic sand, the vines grow in baskets on the ground to survive the wind, and the whole island is walkable in a long day. Come in April, May, September or October; July and August are hot, full and expensive.

What you'll do

The four we'd book first

  1. The blue hour in Oia

Everyone photographs the sunset and leaves. Stay twenty minutes longer for the blue hour, when the whitewash goes violet and the crowd has gone.

  2. The caldera under sail

A catamaran out to the hot springs at Palea Kameni, then Red Beach and White Beach from the water — the only sensible way to see either.

  3. Assyrtiko, straight from the barrel

Volcanic soil and no rain make a bone-dry white you will not find at home. The Santo and Venetsanos terraces both look straight down the caldera.

  4. Akrotiri

A Bronze Age town buried by the eruption and preserved like Pompeii, with three-storey houses and drainage under a modern roof.
