Day 1
Arrive in Athens
Met at the airport and driven to Plaka, in the lanes under the Acropolis. An evening walk up Areopagus hill for the view.

Day 2
The ancient city
The Acropolis on opening, then the Parthenon marbles in the new museum, the Agora after lunch, and dinner on a Monastiraki roof.

Day 3
Fly down to Santorini
Forty-five minutes to the island and up to a caldera-view room in Imerovigli. Nothing planned but the view and the sunset.

Day 4
The caldera by boat
A catamaran along the cliffs to Nea Kameni's crater, the sulphur springs at Palea Kameni, and Red Beach with lunch cooked on board.

Fira to Oia, on foot
Ten kilometres along the rim through Firostefani and Imerovigli — three hours at a walk, best begun at eight — and Oia for the evening.

Wine and the Bronze Age
Akrotiri's excavated town in the morning, then two volcanic-soil wineries on the southern ridge with the caldera below.

A day at the black beaches
Perissa or Kamari for volcanic sand and a taverna lunch, then the ruins of Ancient Thira on the headland between them.
