About Norway

Norway's coast is 100,000 kilometres long once you count the fjords, which are glacier-cut valleys that the sea flooded when the ice left. The Sognefjord runs 205 km inland and its narrowest arm, the Nærøyfjord, is 250 m across with 1,300 m walls — the reason it is on the Unesco list and the reason the small boats are better than the cruise ships. The country is best taken by train and ferry rather than by car: the Bergen and Flåm railways, the coastal steamer north, and the branch lines that end where the road does. June to August gives you the midnight sun and every mountain road open; September to March is the aurora season, and a different trip entirely.

  1. The Nærøyfjord by small boat

    Two hours down the narrowest navigable arm in Europe, on an electric ferry quiet enough to hear the waterfalls on both sides.

  2. The Flåm railway

    Twenty kilometres and 866 m of descent at a gradient of one in eighteen, without a rack rail, which should not really be possible.

  3. Preikestolen

    A four-hour round walk to a flat granite shelf 604 m above the Lysefjord, with no railing and no need for one.

  4. Bryggen at low sun

    Bergen's Hanseatic wharf — leaning wooden trading houses from the 1700s, with alleys behind them barely a shoulder wide.
