Arrive in Oslo

The Viking ships
The Oseberg and Gokstad hulls, the Kon-Tiki and the Fram, then the Historical Museum's runestones and medieval church art.

The mountain railway west
Seven hours across the Hardangervidda to Bergen, the highest main line in northern Europe, with a stop at Finse.

Hanseatic Bergen
Bryggen's trading houses and the Hanseatic museum with a historian, the stave church at Fantoft, and Grieg's villa.

Day 5
Aboard the coastal steamer
North in the evening for the run up the coast, in an outside cabin, with the fjord mouths and light shifting through the night.

Day 6
Ålesund and Trondheim
Ashore at Ålesund for the art nouveau centre, then on to Trondheim for Nidaros cathedral, built over St Olav's grave.

Day 7
Across the Arctic Circle
The ceremony at 66°33′ north, the Seven Sisters range off the port side, and Bodø by evening.

Into the Lofoten
Ashore at Stamsund and across to Reine, staying in a converted rorbu — a fisherman's cabin on stilts over the water.

Stockfish and Vikings
The Å fishing village museum, the drying racks that have exported cod to Italy for six centuries, and the Borg Viking longhouse.

North to Tromsø
The coastal steamer's last leg through the Raftsundet and the Trollfjord, into Tromsø under the Arctic cathedral.

The polar museum in the morning, then out to a Sami family's reindeer camp — herding, joik singing and a meal in a lavvu.
