About Rome
Rome is not a city with historic sites in it; it is a city built out of them. A church will have a medieval floor over a fourth-century basilica over a Mithraic temple, and the block behind it will be a stadium turned into a piazza. That density is the reason six days is the minimum and the reason it rewards walking — nothing in the centre is more than half an hour from anything else, and the interesting parts are between the famous ones. Come in April, May or the second half of September, when the light is long, the evenings warm enough to eat outside, and the August heat and closures are well clear.

What you'll do
The four we'd book first
The Forum from the Palatine
Up on the hill first, where the whole imperial centre lays itself out below and you can finally see how the pieces fit.
The Pantheon's oculus
Unreinforced concrete, 43 m across, standing since 126 AD, with an open hole in the top and rain that falls straight through it.
Testaccio market at nine
The city's best food market, still mostly locals, with a trapizzino stall and cheese counters that will let you taste before buying.
Trastevere after dark
Cobbles, ivy, no through traffic, and Santa Maria's twelfth-century gold mosaics lit up over an otherwise ordinary square.
Curated itineraries
Rome packages
Two thousand years stacked on a single street, a market breakfast in Testaccio, and the Forum walked before the Colosseum queues have formed.
