  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Rome

    Into a hotel near Termini, bikes and boots checked, and an evening walk over the Aventine for the orange-garden view.

    The Appian Way by bicycle

    Thirty kilometres out along the original basalt paving past tombs, aqueducts and catacombs, with the Forum on the way back in.

    North-east into Umbria

    Three hours to an agriturismo below the Sibillini, with an afternoon walk up to a hill village and dinner from the farm.

    Via ferrata

    A cabled route on the Sibillini limestone with a mountain guide — no climbing experience needed, a head for heights very much so.

    The Marmore falls and the gorge

    Rafting the Nera below Europe's tallest man-made waterfall, then the Roman town at Carsulae with nobody else in it.

    South to the coast

    The long transfer past Naples to a pensione in Praiano, halfway along the Amalfi coast and a bus stop from both ends of it.

    The Path of the Gods

    Bomerano to Nocelle along the Sentiero degli Dei, 500 m above the sea the whole way, then the 1,700 steps down into Positano.

    The crater rim at 1,281 m first, then Pompeii from the quiet Porta Marina gate with an archaeologist for the afternoon.
