Arrive at the creek
A hotel on the Deira side, deliberately — the creek is the reason the city exists, and it is still working at six in the morning.

Al Fahidi and the souks
Wind-tower houses, the Coffee Museum, Al Shindagha's pearl-diving rooms, and the abra across to the gold and spice souks. Lunch at Arabian Tea House.

Day 3
Sharjah
Half an hour up the road. The Museum of Islamic Civilisation, the Sharjah Art Foundation's courtyard galleries, and the Blue Souk before it shuts for the afternoon.

Modern Dubai, on purpose
Museum of the Future, Alserkal Avenue's warehouse galleries, and Burj Khalifa at sunset — the contrast reads better in this order.

Down to Abu Dhabi
Qasr Al Hosn, the coral-stone fort the capital grew around, then Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Grand Mosque as the light goes and the marble turns blue.

Back north, and the desert
Al Ain's oasis and camel market on the way if time allows, then back to Dubai for an evening at a desert camp with Emirati food and no floorshow.
