Day 1
Arrive, and up the Mattertal
Zürich to Zermatt by train, the last stretch on the Matterhorn Gotthard line, and a chalet suite with the mountain framed in the window.

Day 2
The Matterhorn, up close
The Gornergrat railway early for the clear light, the walk down to Riffelsee where the peak reflects, and a spa afternoon.

By helicopter
Twenty-five minutes around the Matterhorn and over the Gorner glacier, then a long lunch on a sun terrace at 2,600 m.

Glacier Paradise, and dinner up high
The cable car to 3,883 m and the ice palace cut into the glacier, then dinner at the Gornergrat with the sunset on the north face.

Back through the Lötschberg to a valley with seventy-two waterfalls in it, and a hotel on the shelf above the village.

Cable cars up to the revolving restaurant at 2,970 m, then the walk from Mürren to Gimmelwald along the cliff edge.
