    Arrive in Tokyo

    Met at Haneda or Narita, taken to Shinjuku, and given a pocket wifi and a charged IC card. Nothing else planned.

    Old Tokyo

    Senso-ji at Asakusa early, the Sumida river by boat, Ueno's park and museums, and Yanaka's lanes, which survived the war and the bubble both.

    New Tokyo

    Meiji shrine's forest, Harajuku and Omotesando, teamLab's digital rooms in the afternoon, and Shibuya crossing from above at dusk.

    Toyosu, and a day of your own

    The tuna auction from the gallery at half past five, sushi for breakfast at Tsukiji, then Akihabara, Shimokitazawa or a long nap.

    Down to Hakone

    The Romancecar to the hills, then the loop — funicular, ropeway over the sulphur vents, and the pirate ship across Lake Ashi to a ryokan.

    Fuji, weather permitting

    The open-air museum's Picassos and Henry Moores, the shrine gate standing in the lake, and Fuji itself if the cloud lifts. It often does at dawn.

    Bullet train to Kyoto

    Two hours west on the Hikari, with Fuji out of the right-hand windows for four minutes if you are watching, and a hotel near Gion.

    Eastern Kyoto

    Fushimi Inari at six, Kiyomizu-dera by eight, then Sannenzaka's slopes, Yasaka shrine and Gion's lanes as the lanterns come on.

    Arashiyama and the north-west

    The bamboo grove first thing, the Hozugawa river by boat, Tenryu-ji's garden, and Kinkaku-ji's gold pavilion late in the day.

    Hiroshima and Miyajima

    Ninety minutes on the Nozomi to the Peace Park and museum, then the ferry to Miyajima for the floating torii and the deer.

    Todai-ji's great bronze Buddha and the deer park in the morning, then on to Osaka for Dotonbori and as much street food as you can manage.
